Classification Exception Areas (CEAs)

New Jersey sites with groundwater contaminant plumes are currently required by NJDEP to apply for CEAs, which remain in force for the duration of the approved groundwater remediation activities (such as natural attenuation). The CEA is a temporary designation which applies to groundwater in the plume area and in the area(s) of predicted plume migration. It functions as a mechanism for notifying various concerned parties (current or potential users of groundwater, municipal officials, etc.) of the existence of an ongoing groundwater remediation project for informing potential users of any limitations on water usage which may be required by the NJDEP. BEC has obtained CEAs as part of groundwater remediation projects.
